Beauty of Calabria - Tropea (Italy)

All beauty of Calabria in one place - Tropea

Tropea is a famous bathing place, situated on a reef, in the Gulf of Saint Euphemia connected with the mainland by a narrow strip in the Tyrrhenian Sea, toward the south with respect to Vibo Valentia and northward with respect to Ricadi and Capo Vaticano.

Tropea is nicknamed the Pearl of the Tyrrhenian Sea and is located on a terrace at about 70 meters above sea level. It is the best known Calabrian resort, with its walls, its towers, its gates, its sandy beach and a charming medieval historical centre.

Tourism is the main economic resource for Tropea. Charming historical center, fantastic beaches and good food attract many tourists.

Set high above Tropea’s beaches on a rocky promontory is the Sanctuary of Santa Maria dell’Isola, a 6th-century Benedictine monastery. Earthquakes in 1783 and 1905 hit the structure hard, and the church has been rebuilt, giving it a more modern look. Wear your walking shoes and bring a bottle of water for the trek to the top—about 300 steps up a staircase built into the rock around 1810.

Santa Maria dell’Isola is the classic postcard shot of Tropea, with incredible views to Sicily’s Aeolian Islands. When you reach the sanctuary, be sure to also admire the stacked houses of old Tropea, impossibly clinging to their own immense rock opposite the church.

Note: From Tropea you can do mini-cruises to the Aeolian Islands: Vulcano, Lipari and Stromboli with active volcano.

Many villages around Tropea produce a particular quality of red onion. In Italy these onions are so famous that cipolla di Tropea ("Tropea onion" or "Tropea's onion") has become an Italian synonym for all red onions.

Highly recommended Pimm's Restaurant in Tropea.

Lovely restaurant with delicious food and great sea view.

The best time to visit Tropea is May, June or September, October.

In July and August you will find a lot of Italian and European tourists.

But under Christmas time Tropea is also cute:

And with this sunset.... Ciao Ciao
